Duluth MN Public Library's July 07 Workshop
"Gladys Goes Bananas"

"It's like a page from the book come to life," exclaimed a young participant at the Duluth Minnesota Public Library's July 07 workshop. "Gladys Goes Bananas". NAME members Carol Dyson and Andrea Bauer guided 30 first through third grade boys and girls through the two hour project.

First, the children's book Gladys Goes Out to Lunch by Derek Anderson, was read aloud. Gladys is a purple gorilla who is tired of eating bananas and goes in search of new food. She tries escargot, pizza, ice cream, and more before finally what she wants - banana bread!

Then the participants each created a miniature scene on a folded cardboard cake round complete with Gladys, the Zoo Goodies cart and several food items including banana bread, of course. Last, the children completed a writing project expressing their own likes and dislikes. Much to their delight, a snack of banana bread, freshly baked in a corner of the workshop room, was served.

The workshop was sponsored by the Delta Kappa Gamma Society International (Beta Chapter) and the Duluth Public Library. This was the third year that Carol and Andrea have led a summer workshop for children at the library. Beta Chapter members have assisted at all three events.
